Your Check List

  • Keep a close eye on your pet when it’s not on a leash. This includes your yard, dog runs, parks etc.
  • Take them for regular walks. Not only will they get to know the area they live in, it also will use up some of their pent up energy. It’s this pent up energy that might cause them to want to go for a walk on their own.
  • Check your yard at least once a week for any shifting of the ground. Check for gaps and holes that your dog can escape through. You will be amazed how small a hole your dog can get through. Make sure everything is closed off. In the winter time make sure there are no snow piles for them to climb on and get over the fence.
  • Check your gate before letting your dog out. Someone might have opened it or not closed it properly. Make sure it works properly so that the wind cannot open it. You might want to put a pad lock on them.
  • Jumping Over Fences. Make sure there is not a pile of wood or things that the dog can jump on and jump over the fence. Once again be aware of any snow piles or drifts.
  • Don’t tie your dog outside of stores or other public places.
  • Consider microchipping your dog. It’s only about $40 and it’s like getting a needle, no overnight stays. Get the microchip checked once a year when you bring your dog in for the annual checkup. Just to make sure it is still working.
  • Once a year call the City of Winnipeg and your vet to make sure your information is up to date and there are no type o’s.
  • Check Doors When Guests Come & Go. If you are planning on having company over, please make sure your dog is safe. Doors will be opening and closing during this time. Make sure you know where your dog is at all times. Maybe put a leash on them so it’s easy to grab them if they are heading for the door. Make sure they have a quiet place to relax and feel safe. Put them in a quiet room with a radio or tv on.
  • Fireworks can be very frightening for your dog. Do not take them to watch fireworks with you. Keep them home where they will feel safe.
  • Storms can be very frightening to them as well. Keep them safe in the house. If they need to go out, put a leash on them and go with them. This way if thunder happens while you are out, your dog will not be able to bolt. Quickly bring them back in to the safety of your home.
